As I sit in my office and look out the windows, I can’t help but think about the long-term effects of living in a technological world. It seems that each day more things become easier to do or purchase. But as far as the long-term effect goes, I’d say we’re only starting to understand the negative consequences of this, but we can begin to see the impact of these things on our lives and the lives of those we love.
As technology continues to advance at a rapid rate, we’re able to communicate more effectively. But as the ability to communicate becomes more common, we have more opportunities to be hurt by it. There are countless ways that a computer, cell phone, internet connection, or other electronic devices could actually cause harm to us. It’s important that we consider the impact that our personal technology is having on our lives, not only as a matter of what it means to us individually but as a societal concern.
As you may already know, most of our information is stored on a personal computer or cellular phone. And while these devices allow us to keep in touch with friends, family, colleagues, or anyone else we know, technology has also allowed people to become more dependent on these items.
People who are extremely busy find it difficult to have time to spend with one another without the help of their personal computer. People who are constantly traveling or have very few options to connect with people are often very much dependent on the use of this type of technology to keep in touch. Those who are not very social or work-oriented may also find this to be extremely beneficial. Allowing us to connect and stay in touch with others, no matter where we may be. Because it’s so easy to use, we have developed relationships that don’t really exist offline.
There are also the psychological effects of the way that electronic devices have changed our communication habits. Many of us have become more aware of our voice and how we say it, and how we’re responding to others when they speak to us. This can actually cause many different problems for those we’re close with. One of the biggest fears of most people is not being able to communicate their feelings properly when they’re speaking to someone they care about.
However, there is hope, if you know how to use your electronic device and how to communicate effectively. Communication can never hurt, no matter how it’s used. If you make sure to use your communication to show your gratitude, respect, tell people how much you appreciate them, or what you’re grateful for, and let them know about your goals or wishes, your communication will be much easier to use.
