Russian fashion has a long history. It is believed to have been started around the 10th century. Russian costumes differ from region to region. Many of the traditional Russian clothes are not worn today except a few of them. Rubakha is one such traditional dress which is still worn. Russians often wear Rubakha under a Sarafan. Women in particular wore Kaftan (coat) and fur coat called Shuba. The traditional Russian costume is not just beautiful but is also designed to be convenient for work.
Sarafan: Sarafan emerged from Sarafanets (male dress) which was a long, sleeved narrow garment. However, Sarafan was a long sleeveless garment which was worn by women. Rich women worn Sarafan which was made from silk whereas the common women wore these made by linen. The cut of the Sarafan were straight or oblique wedges. Later this became the national costume of women in Russia. Men wore Rubakha with Porty and belt.
Rubakha: Sarafan was worn over Rubakha. It is an oversized shirt worn by men. This was made by linen, cotton or by silk. It was very long up to mid-knee but later it was shortened to thigh. It was worn both at home and for special occasions. It was a very comfortable form of cloth that it remained unchanged until the beginning of the 20th century. Women wore Rubakhi which was long up to their ankles with long sleeves. Common people worn Rubakha made from homemade cloth whereas rich wore this made from silk or other expensive fabrics.
Other traditional Russian shirts are Kosovorotka, Tolstovka (also called as Tolstoy shirt), and Ivan etc. Kosovorotka had fine embroidery where Tolstovka is simple with no designs or embroidery. Leather is also an integral part of traditional Russian clothing. Orenburg made from goat’s skin and Pavlovsky Posad made from woollen are Russian shawls which are noteworthy.
Fashion today: The trend in Russia today is very similar to Europe and US. However, winter clothing is very different in Russia since it is extremely cold and long there. Russian women often wear leather coats or woollen coats combined with heeled boots during winter. This is combined with fur hats and gloves. In summer they prefer to wear skinny jeans with high heeled boots. Men wear leather and woollen coats, gloves and boots during winter. They prefer dark brown, black or any dark colour.
